Now let me be clear. Of course it’s way easier to take your business online if you have money: you can advertise more, outsource more, invest in better tools and systems, get support and training rather than figuring it out on your own.
But it’s not necessary. And you CAN start a business online today with just $100 in your pocket!
So in this post I want to show you how to launch your business online and what tools you can use for free… you can use this as a simple checklist to help you get started.
However – this is something you should be aware of. Because tools-schmools can be there or not there – but it’s not the REAL reason that’s stopping so many talented and creative people to run their business online.
And right now you might be creating reasons why you can’t build the business and life of your dreams. But – even if you are working full time, even if you are still in education, even if you have no idea what tech to use or where to start, you can STILL do it. Others have done it and you can too!
What’s really stopping so many entrepreneurs (and possible you too)? It’s FEAR.
Fear of failure. Fear of visibility. Fear of success. Fear of change.
Those entrepreneurs who are successful and who you are following now didn’t wait to start. They didn’t wait for the perfect time or a perfect website or a perfect idea. They didn’t wait until they had more experience or some special accreditation. They didn’t wait until they had a pile of cash to invest, or until the knew exactly what they needed to do and how.
So don’t let tools or systems, or technology being the reason why you can’t start your online business!
Checklist: How To Start An Online Business With Zero Budget
1 The strategy piece:
Start with defining your vision and big reason why you want to do what you do.
Identify your ideal client and who you really want to work with.
Define the problem you solve and what the transformation you offer.
2 Start building your visibility:
Start publishing content on social media that educates your ideal client.
If you already have a website, you should be publishing content at least once a week. Then create promotional posts to publish on social media to promote the content.
If you don’t have a website, you can use your Facebook personal and business page to publish content.
To create a website for free (or low-cost) and benefit from all SEO benefits of WordPress – use WordPress.com option.
Publishing content at least once a day on Facebook. That’s free.
3 Get started with list building:
Create a lead magnet that solves a problem for your ICA.
Use any free text processing program and then turn into PDF: Word, Pages, Google docs or PowerPoint.
Use either of these two graphics platforms to make it pretty: Canva and/or PicMonkey.
Host the lead magnet on Dropbox, Google Drive or Amazon S3 (it’s not free but it’s less than $5/month).
Sign up for the free version of MailChimp or pay the low monthly fee for Active Campaign, so you can start growing your email list.
Use your social media platforms to promote your lead magnet. Free.
4 Create your products and programs for sale:
Create a group program using PowerPoint and a word processing platform.
Use your website to create a sales page.
If you don’t have a website, use your Facebook page and post status updates with sales page copy, include a call to action and then link to your merchant account.
If you want to create videos or audio’s – most computers or laptops include software that gives you the ability to create movies and audio recordings. If not, use your smartphone.
Host the video on YouTube or Wistia. Host the audio on SoundCloud. Send your clients the links to the content.
If you want to run webinars – use Zoom. It’s free up to 25 people. Or set up a YouTube Live (used to be Google Hangout) on your website for an unlimed number of people.
If you want to run live group coaching calls, put your clients into a private Facebook group and use Facebook Live. All free.
Use Paypal or Stripe as your merchant account. Both are free. They take percentages when transactions are processed.
If you really need to have a membership area for your content – start with Thinkific platform. Really good and easy to use, and has a free option.
To schedule your clients, use simplybook.me or Calendly.
5 Organise and manage your business:
To track your expenses, revenue, taxes etc. use Excel.
To track tasks, projects and business processes use Asana. Free!
To manage your email and calendar use Google Apps (can start free too!).
Keep your files organised in Google Docs or DropBox (from free too).
